Look out for traffic at Makapu'u Lookout

November 12th, 2009 by Paula Bender

While working as the communications contact for Oceanic Institute, I received the Environmental Impact Statement for the state project to shore up and stabilize the rocky hillside along Kalanianaole Highway at Makapu'u.

Upon reading the EIS I learned that the road, beginning at the top of the lookout, where there is a wall overlooking Makapu'u Beach, is sliding. As I commuted daily to Oceanic Institute, I held my breath until I got past the wall and that sharp, rocky cliff that had been shielded with steel mesh a few years earlier. Either rocks would fall down on us or we'd slide down the hill.

Since I live in Hawaii Kai, this roadwork would definitely cramp my commute. It will definitely affect businesses in Waimanalo from Sea Life Park to Olomana Golf Course.  Keneke's Plate Lunch owner Keith Ward is understandably concerned. With the economy as bad as it is, gas prices what they are, who is going to drive over the Koolaus for his awesome shoyu chicken?  I mean, besides the construction workers? YOU ARE!

If there's time in your life to patronize Waimanalo businesses over the next year while this necessary construction project is underway, please do.

Eh! This is Hawaii. Close ranks. Support local businesses.

It's six of one and a half dozen of the other. If the rock slide don't kill ya, Keith's plate lunches will. Personally, I'd prefer the latter.

PS Have you ever had the teri-beef sandwich? If I ever go over the cliff I hope I'll be eating one on the way down.
